Beginnings

Since the 1970s, a few years after the University of Piura was founded, the need to institutionalize, in the long run, tasks involving orientation of parents, students, alumni and teachers. Some isolated efforts were made with rather gratifying results.

Years later, in 1999 Ph D Luz González (Dean of the Faculty of Sciences and Humanities back then) was in charge of putting the Institute of Family Sciences to work at the University of Piura.

Besides visiting various academic institutions, Ph D González saw the convenience of becoming acquainted with the Institute of Family Sciences at the University of Navarra - which has a rather wide and rich experience in this field of expertise – with the aim of obtaining valid references that would enable us to outline the founding guidelines of this University’s Institute. This acquaintance took place during the years of 2001 and 2002.

In 2002 a promoting group was formed to work together with PH D González on the guidelines and creation proposals for the Institute of Family Sciences. The designated members were professors Paúl Corcuera García, César Chinguel Arrese, Mariela García Rojas and Mrs. Mariella Briceño Galdós.

That same year, Ph D Pedro Juan Viladrich, Director of the Institute of Family Sciences at the University of Navarra, visited the University of Piura. The work plan with Ph D Viladrich basically included intense work sessions with the promoting group, explaining the fundamentals, as well as the broad spectrum implied in an Institute of Family Sciences within the university structure, in the light of the experience gathered in the Navarra and bearing in mind Piura’s own characteristics.

He also provided information about the latest developments and characteristics of the Institute and encouraged us into formalizing the initial steps towards the training of the promoting group by registering them into the "On-line Masters Degree Program in Marriage and Family" conducted by the Institute of Family Sciences at the University of Navarra.

The four members of the promoting group registered in the Masters Degree Program in Marriage and Family during the 2002-2004 period. They had to be present in two periods (August 2003 and August 2004) while in Navarra, they met with Ph D Pedro Juan Viladrich, as well as with Ph D Javier Escrivá, Director Of the Masters Program in Marriage and Family.

The Institute of Family Sciences at the University of Piura was formally created on the 21st of March, 2005 through a Superior Council agreement; and was officially presented to the community of Piura on the 23rd of April of the same year. The Institute depends on the Teacher’s Vice Headmaster, Ph D Paúl Corcuera, who has initially assumed its direction.
